Welcome to the enchanting world of Laura-Jayne, the creative force behind Small Dog Silver (named after her pet Jack Russell). Nestled in the rural beauty of Shropshire, Laura-Jayne transforms recycled precious metals into whimsical pieces of jewellery that reflect the nature and wildlife surrounding her.

How did your artistic journey begin?

Beading and a love of all things gemstone was definetely my gateway into jewellery making!

How long have you been creating?

I've always been creative - but started making jewellery seriously in around 2009.

Did you pursue any specific courses or qualifications?

I do have an honours degree in Design from De Montfort University, but that somewhat fell by the wayside, and I ended up working in a very unrelated field!

What has your creative journey been like so far?

Meandering! I think I tried most types of jewellery making before settling on silver and goldsmithing. There is so much to try, and I can be a bit of a magpie!

Where do you draw inspiration from?

I live in a beautifully rural area of Shropshire, so my inspiration is all around me. I also love folklore so try to incorporate touches of it into my designs.

What's your preferred medium?

I use solely recycled precious metals. I think silver is probably my favourite, but I am partial to gold with a matte or satin finish - shiny metal isn't really my style.

What's your favourite subject to represent?

Nature and wildlife, definitely - whimsical with a touch of folklore thrown in.

Where do you work?

From a studio in the corner of our barn.

Have there been any significant turning points in your work or career?

Learning to solder definitely kickstarted my love of working with metals.

Alice sits in the garden in front of a border full of flowers. She has a large watercolour sketchbook and a selectin of paints. Alice is wearing a striped tshirt and has her hair up in a bun.

Any highlights or disasters?

I know it sounds clichéd, but every time someone buys a piece of my work, it's a highlight. Disasters? Working with heat, hammers, saws, and metal definitely increases the chance!

Do you listen to anything while you work?

I'm very partial to 90's and early 2000's alt rock in my studio! Great music - up loud!

When do you prefer to work?

I also have a full-time job, so most of my making is at the weekends.

Do you have a daily routine?

First is always coffee! Then I wander up to the studio, switch on the lights and my equipment, and settle into making. I do try to tidy up every day when I finish - but that rarely actually happens!

What would your ideal creative day be?

One where everything I want to get done happens - with no disasters!

What's in your mug when you're working?

Pretty much always coffee.

Do you have a favourite snack?

I don't really eat in the workshop, but I do love cheese and crackers.

Where can we find more of your work?

You can see more on my website and social media channels:
