Maggie Davis: Finding Courage in Colourful Mixed Media

Writer's picture: The Artists' GalleryThe Artists' Gallery

An Endless Journey of Creative Exploration

When Maggie Davis finally mustered the courage to show her work, it was a long time coming. Despite having taken art courses throughout her adult life, from some of the most talented artists and colleges, she initially lacked the confidence to put her creations on display. All that changed when her husband participated in his first h.Art show.

Maggie tested the waters by exhibiting a few of her pieces alongside his, secretly prepared to hide away and "cry in the bedroom" if it all went wrong. Instead, she sold her work before he did, and sold more of it. She hasn’t looked back since.

The Road to Mixed Media

Maggie’s artistic journey has been filled with courses and constant learning. Recently, she completed a course with Fibre Arts Take 2, which resulted in international publication of her piece "Harris Blues". This milestone reflected her passion for abstraction and fearless use of colour. Over the years, she has become a focal point in various artist groups and exhibitions she’s helped organise.

Inspiration from Family, Local History, and the Hebrides

Family life, local history, and nature are the driving forces behind Maggie’s art. Most recently, the vibrant colours of the Hebrides have defined her latest body of work. As an abstract artist, she employs mixed media and layers of acrylic, ink, pigments, or dyes, often recycling found objects or adding words and stitches to capture a truly organic feel in her pieces.

Studio Life and Challenges

Maggie works from a home studio, where music of all genres keeps her company. Any time of day might find her at her desk once inspiration strikes, sipping tea, or perhaps wine, and nibbling on chocolate. Though Covid and personal illness proved challenging, she credits optimism and a strong support network for helping her navigate these hurdles.
