Today, we're excited to introduce you to Sam Hemming, a talented beadwork artist and one of the visiting creatives at our co-operative gallery. With a passion for beads and an eye for detail, Sam’s work is a blend of inspiration from nature, history, and pure creativity. Let’s dive into her world and discover what makes her artistry so unique.
How did your journey start?
I was inspired by a chance meeting with a renowned American beadworker in my early 20s. That encounter sparked my interest, and I began teaching myself through research and library books.
How long have you been making/creating?
I’ve been making and creating for 35 years now.
Did you pursue any formal training or qualifications in beadwork?
I completed O Levels and A Levels, but I didn’t earn any formal qualifications in beadwork. However, I did study and qualify as a reflexologist and on-site massage practitioner in my 20s.
How would you describe your creative journey so far?
It’s been an enjoyable and enriching experience. Discovering the beauty of beads and my own inherent creativity through them has been wonderful, and meeting lovely, appreciative customers along the way has been a real highlight.
Where do you draw inspiration for your designs?
My inspiration comes from nature, the gemstones and glass beads themselves, Egyptian and ethnic jewellery, and sometimes, ideas just pop up unexpectedly.
What is your favourite medium?
I love working with glass and gemstone beads and cabochons. I also enjoy oil painting when I get the chance.
Where do you create your stunning beadwork?
I work from home in Malvern, Worcestershire.
Can you share any highlights or challenges you’ve faced along the way?
There have been a few highlights, like selling some of my pieces in Liberty’s London Jewellery Department when I first started and selling to a gallery in Japan in the early 2000s. As for challenges, there have been many disasters too - sometimes you can only tell if something will work by experimenting. I have a large box of experiments that need to be cut up and the beads recycled!
Do you listen to anything while you work?
Yes, I usually listen to Radio 4 and 6 or podcasts.
When do you find it best to work, and do you have a preferred time of day?
My favourite time to work is when I’m most inspired and in a creative flow!
Do you have a daily routine?
Yes, I get up and set to whatever tasks are at hand, always punctuated by a dog walk or two.
What would your ideal creative day be?
My ideal day would be visiting the Tucson Rock and Gem Show in Arizona and selecting some beautiful stones to work with.
Do you have a favourite snack?
An authentically spiced Indian samosa.
